Towns Protocol (www.towns.com) is a protocol for building decentralized real-time messaging apps. Towns allows people to create programmable communication use cases, referred to as “Spaces,” in a permissionless manner. These Spaces are ownable, accrue value, feature on-chain subscriptions (“Memberships”), an extendable reputation system, and end-to-end message encryption. Space creators generate revenue by selling on-chain memberships. The Towns Protocol accrues value by collecting fees from these membership sales, as well as from trading and tips exchanged between users. Those fees are collected in ETH and used to offset, via programmatic buy and burn, the rewards the protocol emits for node operators. As of July 26th, Towns had over 9117 ETH in gross revenue, and the protocol has collected over 901 ETH in net fees.
0. Overview:
What the project does/ what problem it solves.
Communities often struggle to monetize without relying on ads, intermediaries, or platform fees, leaving owners and creators unable to directly benefit from the value they build. On Towns, creators earn revenue by selling on-chain memberships, while the Towns Protocol captures value through fees on these sales, as well as from user-to-user trading and tips.
Token use cases
The $TOWNS token serves as the native utility token for the Towns Protocol and powers the protocol across multiple layers:
Network Security: Node Operators are required to stake $TOWNS on Base chain in order to participate in consensus, securing the network through a Proof-of-Stake mechanism.
Governance: $TOWNS holders participate in decentralized governance through the Towns Lodge DAO. Token-weighted on-chain voting is used to propose and decide on protocol upgrades, economic parameters, and feature changes.
Protocol Utility: $TOWNS can be delegated to unlock premium features within Spaces and at the messaging layer of the protocol.
Products, technical details, consensus mechanism, etc.
Towns’ key advance is a decentralized real‑time messaging layer: off‑chain stream nodes handle delivery while all group and channel messages are protected by end‑to‑end encryption, eliminating any central point of control or inspection. This is the first decentralized communication protocol actually powering the transport layer of messaging.
The infrastructure is already operating in production, with an initial rollout of 30 independently run stream nodes powering a fully decentralized chat network and onboarding more operators. Beneath that, a purpose‑built social Layer‑2 “Towns Chain” separates read/write entitlements and moves messages at centralized‑app speed.
Programmable smart contracts on Base mint each “Space,” letting creators own, price, gate, and moderate communication through on‑chain rules that integrate with any EVM contract. All of the entitlement logic has been developed to handle any combination of predicates for onchain assets allowing it to evolve with the crypto space.
Fundraising/token distribution stats, including total amount of tokens sold, token price for different sales (not applicable for equity sale), amount of money raised. If the project has no private sale etc, we can talk about how tokens are distributed.
The project has raised 46.3MM USD from three rounds of private equity + token sales and one round of public token sale (latest), where 16.36% of the TOWNS total token supply has been sold.
Circulating and total supply data.
As at August 5th 2025, the total genesis supply of TOWNS is 10,128,333,333 and the circulating supply upon listing will be 2,109,362,819 (~20.826% of the total token supply.)
