Lightning network yield is the bitcoin wallet business model
The broad point about seed phrases is that with or without there are risks and drawbacks. Because the space is dominated by products that use seed phrases, most discussion has emphasized the advantages of that approach. However, bitcoin is stronger if everyone knows the strengths and weaknesses of each approach.
Neither should be shamed. Putting at least a portion of your coins in either versus leaving all of your coins with a 3rd party custodian is almost certainly better for everyone.

1. Removes Core censorship of consensus valid transactions (described as "paternalistic" by Core devs)
2. Reduces centralization pressure by making certain data stores (OP_RETURN between 81 and 137 bytes) prunable (UTXO set has ballooned to 12GB the past few years)
3. Reduces centralization pressure by eliminating one of the biggest reasons private, centralized mempools exist
