Illegal mining has cost Malaysia $1.1 billion
Over five years, authorities discovered 14,000 underground farms that caused the state energy company TNB damage of more than $1.1 billion.
Miners are being sought with the help of drones and thermal sensors — operators constantly move and disguise their equipment. Just this year, another 3,000 cases of electricity theft have been recorded.
Authorities believe that the schemes are controlled by organized crime groups.
