The scaling design that solved problems today’s DeFi is still struggling with Plasma is one of Ethereum’s earliest scalability frameworks, yet the more the ecosystem evolves, the clearer its relevance becomes. Long before the advent of Rollups and Modular Architectures, Plasma proposed a method of pushing massive transaction loads off of the Ethereum blockchain while allowing Ethereum to remain the ultimate verifier of truth. Today, the problems that Plasma addressed, such as DEX congestion, high latency and fragmented liquidity, remain as the main barriers to growth in the DeFi space. At its core, Plasma establishes independent sidechains referred to as child chains. Each child chain can quickly process thousands of trade or transfer transactions, group them into Merkle proofs and submit them back to Ethereum for final verification. This results in a user experience similar to that found on centralized exchanges.
