Suspicion, sin, and slander against people's morals
One of the most dangerous issues facing society today is slandering people's morals unjustly, whether through bad assumptions or spreading rumors without verification. Slandering the morals of an innocent person can destroy their reputation among people, bringing upon them harm that they cannot bear, and it is one of the greatest forms of injustice.
Islam has emphasized the protection of people's honor and the preservation of their dignity, making it one of the major necessities without which society cannot stand. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Every Muslim's blood, wealth, and honor are sacred to another Muslim." Honor is a person's dignity and reputation; if others violate it through backbiting, gossip, or slander, they have committed one of the major sins.
Slander against others' morals often begins with a bad assumption or a word spoken without deliberation, then spreads among people until it turns into a false accusation that tarnishes the image of the oppressed. Therefore, Allah said: "When you receive it with your tongues and say with your mouths what you have no knowledge of, and you consider it to be insignificant, while it is great in the sight of Allah."
The sincere Muslim keeps his tongue from speaking about people's honor and does not allow himself to be a tool in tarnishing someone's reputation. Instead, he strives to spread goodness and positive assumptions, for a good word is a charity, while a harmful word is a great sin.
Thus, having good assumptions, verifying news, and avoiding slander against morals are the keys to building a cohesive society that is characterized by trust and respect, free from strife and enmities.
