Canada is expanding trade and defense relations with Germany in response to the growing threats of tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump, as reported at a press conference on Parliament Hill.
This week, Prime Minister Mark Carney is traveling to Berlin, where he will meet with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to strengthen economic cooperation and reduce the country’s dependence on American markets.
'We are intensifying our negotiations with Germany on a wide range of issues — from critical minerals to energy, defense, and security,' Carney said on Friday at a press conference.
In Berlin, he will be joined by cabinet ministers responsible for defense, industry, and trade. This visit is seen as a coordinated economic strategy rather than a symbolic diplomatic stop.
Carney told reporters that Trump’s aggressive trade policy leaves Canada no choice but to form new international partnerships. 'Canada must look for other ways to expand our trade, develop our economy, and protect our sovereignty,' he stated earlier this year. 'Canada is ready to take a leading role in creating a coalition of like-minded countries.' The visit to Berlin is part of a broader campaign across Europe that began this week.
Before Carney's trip to Germany, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly visited Sweden and Finland. Foreign Minister Anita Anand also met with representatives from NATO member countries in Northern Europe in Finland. All cabinet actions are part of organized efforts to strengthen ties with European countries amid deteriorating trade stability with the U.S.
In Berlin, Defense Minister David McGinty will meet with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius to discuss military cooperation. Minister of Natural Resources Tim Hodgson will speak directly with leaders of the German defense, energy, and manufacturing sectors. Hodgson will also address a business audience at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin on economic cooperation.
'This is essentially a trade mission focused on energy and critical minerals,' said a Canadian government representative who wished to remain anonymous to discuss these plans. He also referred to Germany as 'one of the priority markets' for the European Union, noting its status as the largest economy on the continent.
Germany is counting on Canadian supplies of mineral resources for its clean energy and electric vehicle industries. As a NATO member, Germany also needs stable sources to support increased spending on military equipment, which is set to reach 5% of GDP to meet the alliance's new commitments.
Canadian minerals are considered crucial for these efforts. Germany is also continuing to work towards a complete disconnection from Russian gas supplies, making trade negotiations even more relevant.
Hodgson will also continue working on the Canadian-German hydrogen alliance signed in 2022. This agreement aims to begin hydrogen supplies across the Atlantic by this year. 'We have been actively working with them over the past few years to create a transatlantic hydrogen corridor,' said the same official. No further updates on the timeline for the start of supplies have been provided.
Another important issue on the agenda is China's control over critical minerals. Germany is striving to diversify its supply chain to avoid dependence on Chinese exports. Canada positions itself as an alternative and is ready to attract German capital to implement projects. 'Canada has a lot to offer the world, but it also requires attracting investments,' said the official. 'We are open to German investments in Canadian projects if it helps move them forward.'
Carney stated that the upcoming meeting in Berlin will be based on his previous conversations with Merz during the G7 summit in Alberta. During this visit, they will also discuss Ukraine, as Carney has with other world leaders in recent months. 'I have discussed this issue, including with President Trump, in the past few weeks. We are making progress,' Carney said. He described the negotiations regarding Canada's future involvement in the Ukrainian issue as 'delicate.'
Despite rising tensions, Trump stated on Friday that he still wants good relations with Canada. 'I want to be very nice to Canada,' he said from the Oval Office. 'I really like Carney. I think he is a good guy.' Trump's statement came after Carney had already made it clear that Ottawa would not sit idly by waiting for another round of tariffs.
