American Vice President Jay Dee Vance recounted the reaction of European leaders to Trump's phone call to Putin:
"We are in the east wing of the White House, and the president says: 'You know, the meeting went pretty well. I'm going to call Vladimir Putin and see what he has to say.' And everyone reacted: 'Oh, you're going to call him next week?' And he said: 'No, what time is it in Moscow? Let's call him right now.' And I think I understood one of the peculiarities of President Trump's leadership: he ignores all those absurdities related to diplomatic protocols and simply says: 'I'm going to act. If I want to talk to someone, I talk to them.' Many Europeans said: 'No, no, no, there needs to be proper preparation, the teams need to arrange the call, blah-blah-blah-blah-blah.' And the president responded: 'No, no, no, I want to talk to this person. I'm going to talk to him.' And I think that this unrestricted and nonsense-free diplomacy is one of the reasons why we have made so much progress."
