Trump Orders Southern Border Wall Painted Black to Deter Climbers
President Donald Trump has ordered the U.S.–Mexico border wall to be painted black, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced Tuesday.
Noem said the dark color will make the wall absorb more heat, turning the steel hotter and “harder to climb.” She added this was done at Trump’s request.
Tests of black-painted sections were first done near Calexico, California during Trump’s first term. A 2020 estimate said painting the full wall could cost up to $3 billion, depending on the paint used.
Noem also said the Department of Homeland Security will add more cameras and sensors to strengthen security, though no timeline was given.
