Democrat Nicole Collier spent the night in the state House chamber. She refused to sign a form that would put her under 24/7 police escort outside the chamber. Democrats Gene Wu and Vince Perez joined her in support.
The escort rule was ordered by Republican House Speaker Dustin Burrows after Democrats ended a two-week walkout over redistricting. With enough members back on Monday, quorum was restored and the next session was set for Wednesday.
Republicans plan to pass new voting maps that could add up to five GOP-leaning U.S. House seats. Democrats say the maps weaken minority voting power and plan to sue. Similar map fights are happening in other states.
Until Collier signs the form, she’s limited to the House floor and her office until lawmakers meet again on Wednesday to resume debate.
