$DOGE Dogecoin (DOGE) is a new digital currency originally launched as a 'meme coin' within the cryptocurrency community. Over time, Dogecoin has grown to become a large blockchain network and one of the most popular alternative cryptocurrencies available in the market.
There is also a strong foundation and reason for creating and developing Dogecoin. The co-founders, Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus, both software engineers by professional background and experience, wanted to make digital currency accessible to individuals outside the realm of Bitcoin.
The founders expressed that the saturation and difficulty in mining Bitcoin since its inception and until the beginning of Dogecoin made it hard for the average person to participate in the mining process. This was due to limited resources as well as technical expertise. Dogecoin was envisioned as an entry point for less experienced individuals to engage in the cryptocurrency sector.
The launch of Bitcoin in 2009 spurred the creation and launch of many digital currencies, each offering different use cases and functionalities. However, Dogecoin does not offer specific use cases — DOGE has been a collaborative effort by the cryptocurrency community and is now listed on most major trading platforms.
