OpenAI CEO Sam Altman presented a grand vision for the company's future during a private dinner with The Verge journalists in San Francisco, discussing massive investments in infrastructure, new business directions, and even acquiring Google Chrome.
Altman acknowledged that the launch of GPT-5 last week was not without mistakes, stating outright: 'We completely messed up.' Nevertheless, demand surged sharply, API traffic doubled in two days, and ChatGPT broke records for daily user numbers.
Today, the platform interacts with more than 700 million people weekly, four times more than last year. 'Soon billions of people a day will be interacting with ChatGPT,' said Altman.
He announced that OpenAI would spend record amounts, possibly trillions, on building data centers, which he believes is necessary to support AI growth. He also confirmed interest in investing in a company developing a brain-computer interface that would compete with Elon Musk's Neuralink.
Regarding Chrome, Altman stated that one should not rule out the possibility of antitrust pressure on Google, which could pave the way for an acquisition. 'If Chrome is indeed going to be sold, we should consider it,' he said, suggesting that OpenAI might explore the browser market if the opportunity arises.
Altman is not the first to express interest in purchasing Chrome. Reports indicate that Perplexity AI also made an unexpected offer to buy Google’s Chrome browser for $34.5 billion. This company stands to benefit if the U.S. government forces Google to sell it. Thus, Google faces antitrust pressure, which has also drawn the attention of Sam Altman from OpenAI.
Even while warning that the current investment environment has turned into an 'AI bubble' with inflated expectations, Altman remains convinced that artificial intelligence is 'the most significant event in a long time.' Discussing his long-term future, when asked if he would lead OpenAI as a public company, Altman responded with skepticism and suggested that in three years the company might be run by an AI program.
If Altman's vision comes to fruition, it could change not only the future of OpenAI but also the entire technological landscape.
