Big investors are buying more cryptocurrency, especially Ethereum and Bitcoin. BitMine has been building up its Ethereum holdings over the past 34 days. It recently bought another $470 million worth of ETH, bringing its total to 1.3 million ETH — about 1% of all Ethereum in circulation. This matches the recent surge of money flowing into Ethereum ETFs, which brought in $2.8 billion last week, four times more than Bitcoin ETFs. BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF now holds 749,000 BTC, worth over $85 billion, making it one of the biggest Bitcoin holders in the world. BlackRock has also been buying Ethereum quickly, adding 2.5 times more ETH than BTC. Sharplink Gaming increased its Ethereum treasury to about 728,804 ETH (worth $3.4 billion). Almost all of it is staked, earning about 1,326 ETH in rewards. However, on August 15, both Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs saw their first net outflows since early August. Australia has given political asylum to former Hong Kong lawmaker Ted Hui Chi-fung, four years after he fled the city during the 2019 pro-democracy protests. Hui, now living in Adelaide, said Australia’s Department of Home Affairs informed him of the decision on 17 August. Hui, 42, was convicted in absentia in 2022 on protest-related charges. He faces 3½ years in prison and a HK$1 million bounty from Hong Kong police. The Hong Kong government strongly criticized Australia’s move, accusing Canberra of “harbouring criminals” and warning that countries offering asylum are showing “contempt for the rule of law.” Chinese state media also attacked the decision, telling Australia not to interfere in China’s internal affairs. This could create new tensions between China and Australia, just as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been trying to improve relations. Last month, Albanese visited Beijing, where President Xi Jinping said ties were recovering. Meanwhile, the UK also granted asylum to activist Tony Chung Hon-lam, which led to similar criticism from Hong Kong authorities.
