Speed, Security, and Decentralization
Bitlayer uses a distinctive dual-layer architecture that blends high-speed performance with the unmatched security of the Bitcoin network.
Layer 1: Proof-of-Stake (PoS) for Speed
The first layer runs on a PoS consensus mechanism built for rapid performance. Validators in this layer produce and validate L2 blocks, creating a high-throughput, EVM-compatible environment for a seamless user experience. Each validator stakes BTR tokens to secure their position, with their influence in the consensus process proportional to the amount staked.
Layer 2: Rollup Framework for Security
The second layer acts as a rollup framework, anchoring the L2 chain’s security to Bitcoin. It periodically commits and finalizes the state of the L2 network on the Bitcoin blockchain. In this setup, Bitcoin ensures ultimate security and data availability, while Bitlayer serves as the scalable, efficient computation layer.
Key Participants
Validators – The backbone of the PoS consensus, tasked with block production and validation.
Rollup Operator – A rotating role assigned to a single validator. This operator bundles L2 state transitions, generates cryptographic proofs, and submits them to Bitcoin’s L1. To maintain accountability, the operator locks a substantial BTC collateral, with the role changing periodically to avoid centralization.
Full Nodes – Maintain a complete record of the Bitlayer blockchain, verifying all transactions and state changes independently. They ensure transparency and uphold protocol rules without depending on validators.
