The Challenge–Response Game: Inside Bitlayer’s Claim Verification Process
Bitlayer’s single-claim verification can be seen as a timed challenge–response game, where each participant has a defined role and a clear set of rules to follow.
Game Master — The Setup
The process starts with a trusted public setup. An Attesting Committee pre-signs a sequence of Bitcoin transactions, preparing all required locking scripts and verification sub-programs. This groundwork sets the stage for the game.
The Challenger — Operator’s Move
The Operator kicks things off by broadcasting a Claim transaction and locking their collateral. This serves as a public statement of the proposed new L2 state and triggers the countdown timer.
The Referee — Watchers on Guard
Watchers act as the game’s security layer. They observe each claim and have a fixed time window to either silently approve it or contest it if they detect fraud. Challenging requires a small collateral deposit, discouraging baseless disputes.
The Resolution — Playing It Out
If a challenge is made, the Operator must counter with an Assert transaction, revealing the verification sub-program results. The Watcher’s final chance is to identify a mismatch and submit proof on-chain via a Disprove transaction. If the disproval succeeds, the Operator loses their collateral, and the Watcher earns a share—creating strong economic incentives to uphold the game’s integrity.
