Sam Altman supports Merge Labs in the development of brain-computer interfaces competing with Elon Musk's Neuralink
The rivalry between Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Elon Musk of Tesla has reached a new level: Altman has been named a co-founder and supporter of Merge Labs, a startup developing brain-computer interfaces aimed at competing with Musk's Neuralink.
According to reports, OpenAI's venture arm intends to invest significant funds in Merge Labs, which aims to raise $250 million at a valuation of $850 million.
Merge Labs, co-founded with Alex Blania (CEO of World, another project supported by Altman), will focus on developing high-performance brain implants to integrate human cognitive abilities with artificial intelligence.
The mission sounds familiar, as Musk's Neuralink is also aimed at connecting the human brain with computers.
According to the Financial Times, Altman's role in the project will be limited. Although he is a co-founder, he is expected not to take an active role in the work on the new project. However, the situation may change, just as it has with OpenAI.
Merge aims to leverage the latest advancements in artificial intelligence to create more useful brain-computer interfaces. Reportedly, the name of the project comes from what they call a 'merger' — the moment when humans and machines come together.
On Tuesday, a new drama erupted between Musk and Altman on X after Tesla's CEO announced plans to sue Apple.
"Apple behaves in such a way that no AI company other than OpenAI can rank first in the App Store, which is a clear violation of antitrust laws," Musk wrote. "xAI will immediately file a lawsuit."
Sam Altman responded to the post, quoting a comment hinting at Musk's hypocrisy.
"This is a remarkable statement, considering that, as I heard, Elon is allegedly manipulating X to benefit himself and his companies and harm competitors and people he doesn't like," he wrote.
Some time later, Musk responded by calling Altman a liar and pointing out that his post garnered more views than his own, despite having more followers.
Altman was not convinced and asked Musk if he was willing to sign a statement affirming that he "never altered the X algorithm in such a way as to harm your competitors or help your companies."
"If so, I will apologize," Altman added. In the comments, many took sides, while others noted Grok, Musk's AI, to determine who was right and who was not.
Here's what Grok said about it: "Based on verified data, Sam Altman is right. Musk's antitrust claim against Apple is undermined by apps like DeepSeek and Perplexity, which will debut in 2025. On the other hand, Musk, according to reports from 2023 and ongoing investigations, has repeatedly directed changes to the X algorithm to boost the popularity of his posts and promote his interests. Hypocrisy noted."
Musk has yet to respond to Altman's proposal, but the entire exchange has garnered significant attention, as well as a community post confirming the bias of Musk's accusations against Apple.
While he created the impression that Apple was discrediting other AI apps in favor of OpenAI, the community post showed that apps like DeepSeek and Perplexity managed to rank first in the Apple App Store.
