Federal Reserve Ends Bank Crypto Activity Supervision Program The Federal Reserve announced the end of the supervisory program for crypto assets and distributed ledger technology activities established in 2023. On Friday, the Federal Reserve announced that it would terminate the program established in August 2023 and will monitor new activities of banks through the normal supervisory process. This program initially focused on monitoring banks' deposit, payment, and loan services provided to crypto assets and fintech entities. "Since the Board began supervising specific crypto and fintech activities of banks, there has been an enhanced understanding of these activities and their associated risks," said the Federal Reserve. "Thus, the oversight of this knowledge and activities will be reintegrated into the standard supervisory process, and the supervisory letter from 2023 has been rescinded." Although this does not mean a reduction in bank oversight, the U.S. government has taken a more lenient regulatory approach to digital assets under the Trump administration. Since January, the Securities and Exchange Commission has halted investigations and enforcement actions against several crypto companies, and Treasury leadership has stated it will align with the White House on the policy of establishing a national crypto reserve. Federal Reserve leadership has become a political issue. President Trump publicly challenged the independence of the Federal Reserve, particularly criticizing Chairman Jerome Powell. Powell's term as chairman will end in 2026, while his term as a board member extends to 2028. Federal Reserve Board and Federal Open Market Committee member Adriana Kugler resigned on August 8. Trump nominated Stephen Moore, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, to temporarily fill Kugler's position until he selects a permanent successor in January.
