Bitlayer is making big moves to bring Bitcoin into the world of decentralized finance (DeFi). Through new technology, strong partnerships, and major funding, the project is unlocking new ways for Bitcoin to be used, not just stored.
1. Bringing Bitcoin into DeFi Without Middlemen
Bitlayer has launched the BitVM Bridge Mainnet Beta, a new system that lets Bitcoin holders turn their BTC into YBTC tokens, each worth exactly the same as 1 BTC. The best part? It’s done in a trustless way, meaning you don’t need to rely on a central company to hold your coins. This is one of the first real-world uses of the BitVM technology.
2. Connecting Bitcoin to Multiple Blockchains
Bitcoin’s liquidity is now reaching more ecosystems thanks to Bitlayer’s multi-chain support. The BitVM Bridge works with major blockchains like Sui, Base, Arbitrum, Starknet, Sonic, Cardano, and Plume Network. This means Bitcoin can now be used for DeFi activities across many different platforms.
3. Partnering with Top Bitcoin Mining Pools
To make sure transactions are secure and processed smoothly, Bitlayer has teamed up with Antpool, F2Pool, and SpiderPool, three mining pools that together handle 36–40% of Bitcoin’s total computing power. This partnership helps process Non-Standard Transactions (NSTs) on-chain, making the BitVM Bridge even more reliable.
4. Backed by $25 Million in Funding
Bitlayer has raised $25 million through seed funding, Series A, and an extension round. The funding was led by top investors like Polychain Capital, Franklin Templeton, Framework Ventures, OKX Ventures, and ABCDE. This financial support ensures Bitlayer has the resources to keep building its Bitcoin-focused infrastructure.
5. Rapid Growth Since Mainnet Launch
Since launching its Mainnet V1 in April 2024, Bitlayer’s ecosystem has grown quickly. The network now supports over 280 decentralized apps (dApps), works with multiple wallets and infrastructure providers, and has become the leading Bitcoin Layer-2 by Total Value Locked (TVL).
6. Building Momentum in BTCFi
Bitlayer’s work has been featured on CoinDesk and Cointelegraph, and the team has been active at major industry events like Bitcoin2025 in Las Vegas. This growing visibility is helping to spread awareness of Bitcoin-native DeFi, also known as BTCFi.
Why This Matters
Bitlayer is combining Bitcoin’s unmatched security with the speed and flexibility of modern DeFi. With the launch of the BitVM Bridge, strong industry partnerships, wide blockchain integrations, and solid funding, Bitlayer is laying the groundwork for Bitcoin to be more than just a store of value — it’s becoming a decentralized financial powerhouse.
This is Bitcoin DeFi unlocked.
