Ethereum core developer Federico Carrone, known on X as "Intern Fede," confirmed that he was released after a 24-hour detention in Turkey on suspicion of connections to the Ethereum privacy protocol.

"I am finally free, safe, and at liberty. There was a brief moment when everything seemed really bad, but thanks to the help of many, I was released," Carrone wrote in a post on X on Monday.

According to Carrone, the Turkish interior minister accused him of "helping others in the unauthorized use of Ethereum" in connection with an alleged association with the privacy protocol. Carrone stated that he believes this is related to research work from January 2022 focused on assessing the privacy of Ethereum users and Tornado Cash.

"We have never helped anyone engage in illegal activity; it was just research on mixers and their properties," said Carrone.

This incident exacerbates a troubling trend of arrests and detentions of cryptocurrency developers for connections to open-source privacy protocols. A prominent example is the case of Tornado Cash co-authors Alexey Percev and Roman Storm, who are awaiting a final verdict in a high-profile trial in New York.
This outcome could set a precedent for criminalizing open-source privacy tools, at least in the USA, posing a serious threat to innovation in decentralized finance and significantly limiting privacy rights.

Carrone is now in Europe after receiving help.
Currently in Europe, Carrone stated that the situation initially did not look promising: he was told that he would lose his mobile phone and would not be able to communicate with anyone.

Carrone said that fortunately, some of his close friends from the UAE, UK, USA, Europe, Argentina, and even the Catholic Church immediately came to his aid, while others contacted high-ranking officials in Turkey to secure his release.

Even participants in the Solana ecosystem provided contacts and offered their assistance, Carrone added.

"I will never forget their help and hope to someday repay everyone who supported me."

However, according to Carrone, the case is still ongoing, and his Turkish lawyer continues to work on his defense.

"We do not yet have a complete picture of what happened and the reasons, but we will bring in the best team we can and resolve this matter," Carrone said. "If necessary, [as soon as] everything is settled, I will return to clear my name and defend myself."

Carrone made a significant donation for Storm's legal defense.
On Tuesday, Carrone stated that he donated Ether (ETH) worth $500,000 to help Storm with legal defense regarding the incident.
"Roman's legal defense is important because builders around the world need to know that they can advance innovation and that the community will support them in this."
