FERJ, which stands for the Football Federation of the State of Rio de Janeiro, is the highest entity responsible for organizing and managing professional and amateur football in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Its headquarters is located in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, and the federation was founded on September 29, 1978.
Main Responsibilities of FERJ
The main function of FERJ is the organization of football championships in all its categories and divisions. Among the most well-known competitions it organizes are:
* Campeonato Carioca - Series A: This is the main competition of the state, contested by major clubs such as Flamengo, Fluminense, Vasco, and Botafogo, as well as other teams.
* Other divisions: FERJ also manages the A2, B1, B2, and C series of the Campeonato Carioca.
* Copa Rio: A tournament contested by teams from all divisions that are not qualified for national competitions, serving as a gateway to the Copa do Brasil and the Série D of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
* Youth categories and women's football: The federation also plays a fundamental role in organizing competitions for the youth categories (Under-15, Under-17, Under-20) and for women's football.
Other Functions
In addition to organizing the championships, FERJ is responsible for managing refereeing, athlete registration, and regulating competitions. The entity acts as a link between the clubs of Rio de Janeiro and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).
