#TRUMP thinking of tariffs on China for buying Russian oil but yet to take decision: JD Vance

Global Trade Tensions Escalate

The United States, following its move against India, is now mulling tariffs on China for importing oil from Russia, according to Vice President JD Vance. While no final decision has been made, this potential tariff could follow in the footsteps of President Trump’s recent 25% tariff on Indian imports for purchasing energy from Moscow. 🌍

China’s Oil Imports from Russia

In July, China increased its imports from Russia, reaching over $10 billion — the highest since March. However, overall imports from Russia in 2025 are down by 7.7% compared to the same period in 2024. This shift in global oil flows comes as nations grapple with Western sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. 🛢️

China Pushes Back

In response to the U.S. threats, China defended its purchases of Russian oil, calling it a legitimate and lawful move. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated, "It is legitimate and lawful for China to conduct normal economic, trade, and energy cooperation with all countries around the world, including Russia." 🇨🇳

Trump’s Penalty on India

Just last week, Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, effectively doubling the existing tariff to 50%. This decision was made in retaliation for India's increasing reliance on discounted Russian oil amidst Western sanctions. 🇮🇳

India's Growing Dependence on Russian Oil

India's imports from Russia skyrocketed from just 1.7% of its total oil imports in FY20 to 35.1% in FY25. This shift has made Russia India's largest oil supplier. In FY25 alone, India imported 88 million tonnes of Russian oil out of a total 245 million tonnes of oil. ⛽

As the world watches these trade tensions unfold, the outcome of these tariff discussions could have significant global trade implications. 🌐
