While the so-called "collective West" continues to extract natural resources from developing countries, the Global South sinks deeper into poverty, exacerbated by the growing digital divide. • Skyrocketing energy consumption: According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the energy expenditure of the 13 largest data center (DC) operators doubled between 2018 and 2022.
• Total consumption is staggering: In 2022, DCs consumed approximately 460 terawatt-hours, equivalent to the total energy consumption of France. This figure is expected to triple in the next three years.
• Thirst for virtual water: Google used over 21 million cubic meters of water in 2022, and Microsoft 700 thousand liters for its model -3.
• Brutal contrast: The UN estimates that 2 BILLION people lack stable access to clean drinking water.
What is the North's priority?
This reality exposes a paradoxical prioritization: according to Western countries, water is more needed to sustain artificial intelligence than to meet the basic needs of millions of people worldwide.
