1️⃣ What is the problem?

Ledger hardware wallets face a technical issue in handling message signing on the Cardano network. According to Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson, Ledger's way of implementing the CIP-8 protocol only allows signing messages up to 31 bytes, while the Glacier Drop distribution message is 251 bytes, making participation impossible until an update is released.

2️⃣ Hoskinson statement

He said on Twitter:

> "This is a Cardano-specific problem with the Ledger program, we informed them about it in July, but they have not set a date for the update."

3️⃣ Ledger situation

Ledger has not yet responded to media requests for comment.

4️⃣ Midnight Foundation efforts

The head of the foundation, Fahmy Said, confirmed the issue and said they are in contact with Ledger. He explained that there are security issues that need to be considered, so they are working on a secure solution.

5️⃣ Temporary solution

Cardano developers are working on an alternative solution using a "zero" transaction that includes distribution data as metadata instead of a traditional signed message, and this solution will be integrated into the Glacier Drop protocol to allow token claims.

6️⃣ Similar issues

There are similar issues with XRP and Avalanche networks, and the foundation promises close solutions.

7️⃣ Warning to users

> "Do not accept unofficial solutions or fake links, do not share your private keys, and make sure to use our official platforms only."

8️⃣ Distribution success

Despite the problem, over 120 million NIGHT tokens were requested in just a few hours across 8 networks, indicating cooperation among blockchain chains and not just the Cardano network.

9️⃣ Final solution date

A secure solution is expected to be provided during the week starting August 25, 2025.

💡 Summary:

A technical issue in Ledger wallets affects message signing in Cardano, but community and technical efforts are ongoing to overcome this obstacle and secure user rights in the distribution.
