A programmer who lost a hard drive with 7500 bitcoins at a landfill has stopped searching

Software engineer James Howells from Newport, UK, has stopped searching for the hard drive containing 7500 bitcoins that he accidentally threw away over ten years ago, reports Financial Express.

The incident occurred in 2013 when Howells mistakenly discarded the hard drive along with old computer equipment at a landfill in Newport.

In 2022, the programmer stated that he had developed a plan to search for the bitcoin drive, which was to involve robot dogs from Boston Dynamics.

In January 2025, a Welsh court prohibited the programmer from digging through garbage piles, fearing that toxic gases from decomposing waste could seriously harm the environment. In March, the UK Court of Appeal rejected James Howells' final petition for permission to search for the drive.

To date, the lost assets are valued at over 900 million dollars (there is a version that there were not 7500 bitcoins, but even 8000)

Previously, Turkish investor Kerem Albayrak lost a cryptocurrency wallet with 50 BTC along with his laptop.
