On Saturday, USA Today published an article that caught the attention of its 5.1 million followers on platform X, stating that "XRP is the smartest cryptocurrency to buy at $500 right now." The post quickly spread on social media, sparking a wave of comments from Bitcoin supporters and XRP fans.
Twitter was upset by USA Today's claim about "the smart buy" for XRP currency.
An article published in USA Today on August 2, and republished by Will Ebiefung from The Motley Fool, caused a huge uproar. The headline of the article that went viral on social media was: "XRP is the smartest cryptocurrency to buy at $500 right now."
Many XRP critics seized the opportunity to criticize USA Today, describing the article as nonsense and fake news. The post was met with fierce reactions from those who have long doubted XRP.
One X user sarcastically commented: "The smartest way to waste $500." Another chimed in: "I wonder if there are any fake news." Some simply responded with mocking images. Meanwhile, XRP supporters enjoyed the backlash. One fan reacted to the anger by posting: "Let's go." Another wrote:
Thanks to USA Today for the alert. People are not indifferent to Ripple currency. Don't listen to the haters.
However, some critics continued to criticize XRP, calling it a "scam," while others warned against "trusting the media." Laura Shin, host of the "Unchained" podcast and cryptocurrency journalist, commented: "Hmm... this news spread widely among USA Today's 5.1 million followers on Twitter. USA Today, you need journalists who understand cryptocurrencies..." Her criticism resonated with many who shared her concerns.
However, XRP enthusiasts were less enthusiastic. When asked about the possibility of bias, Shane replied:
"I mean, the reality is that after 13 years, Ripple has lost almost all its appeal and trading volume."
Shane was not the only one to criticize USA Today's post. One critic pointed out that the author of the article, Will Ebiefung, had previously promoted the SAND token (Sandbox) in 2022. In another article in Motley Fool titled 'The Best Cryptocurrency I Recommend Buying in February,' Ebiefung specifically chose the SAND token.
The critic reinforced his point by sharing a chart showing SAND's decline - from around $4 in February 2022 to just $0.2577 - highlighting what they see as a poor track record for Ebiefung's cryptocurrency picks.
Others were harsher in their response to the XRP post in USA Today, criticizing not only the article but the post itself for amplifying what they considered misleading recommendations.
One person said:
"This seems like unlicensed financial advice, promoting XRP as the 'smartest cryptocurrency to buy for $500 right now' - without any disclaimers or disclosures."
The reaction to the XRP post in USA Today shows the deep division in the cryptocurrency community when it comes to media coverage and investment advice.
While some readers saw this recommendation as a bold gamble, others viewed it as just reckless bait for attention - revealing the growing tension between mainstream media and skeptics of digital assets who call for more scrutiny.
