Joseph-Louis Lagrange (1736-1813) was a brilliant mathematician and astronomer. He made significant contributions to calculus of variations, number theory, celestial and analytic mechanics, and algebra. Born in Turin, Italy, he later became a French citizen. His most famous work, Mécanique analytique, revolutionized mechanics by formulating it in terms of mathematical analysis rather than physical intuition. Lagrange also discovered Lagrangian points, which are gravitationally significant locations in space.
