The crash occurred when a Tesla Model S, operating on its Autopilot system, failed to stop at a T intersection, resulting in a collision that killed Naibel Benavides Leon and seriously injured her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo.

After a three-week trial, the jury assigned 33% of the blame to Tesla and 67% to the driver, George McGee. McGee testified that he was distracted while looking for his phone and expected Autopilot to assist him. Tesla's legal team argued that McGee was solely responsible for the crash, citing the driver's history of speeding and the system's requirement for constant driver attention.

The verdict includes $42.5 million in compensatory damages and $200 million in punitive damages. Tesla has announced plans to appeal the decision, stating that the verdict is "wrong and only works to set back automotive safety."
