People's placebo-like beliefs influence their behavior, further distancing themselves from industries where they missed opportunities. And this avoidance, in turn, reinforces their negative thoughts about these opportunities.
Whether it's "Musk is a fraud, real estate is a bubble, Bitcoin is like tulips, Tencent is a copycat of worthless companies, and all the rich have built their fortunes through shady means," these repetitive statements are invariably intended to comfort the feeling of missing out, and are then further rationalized.
People are stubborn, and to solidify their beliefs, they will refuse to accept any information that contradicts them and refuse to learn anything new. Many middle-aged people often say, "I'm too old to learn," but then follow up with, "But my experience tells me you're wrong."
People are also fragile. They can't accept that they can make mistakes, and they prefer to believe that the world is wrong.
