Warner Bros. Games is not giving up on its ambitions in the live-service gaming space, despite a string of commercial failures. A new job listing from WB Games Montreal suggests that another live-service title is already in the works—even after Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League turned out to be a massive flop that reportedly cost the publisher nearly $200 million.

🧩 Hiring for a New AAA Live-Service Title

The company is currently hiring an executive producer to oversee development from concept to post-launch operations. A key requirement: experience with live-service game development. The upcoming project is described as a AAA title based on one of Warner Bros. or DC’s iconic IPs—fueling speculation among fans about what it could be.

Despite the disastrous performance of Suicide Squad and the lukewarm reception of MultiVersus and Mortal Kombat 1, Warner Bros. appears to be doubling down on live-service efforts. It seems eager to replicate the success seen with titles like Overwatch 2 or Genshin Impact.

🧨 Losses and Layoffs Continue

Last year’s Suicide Squad failure hit WB Games hard, triggering mass layoffs. Another blow came from Gotham Knights, which failed to make an impact. Total revenue dropped by 41% in 2023, and the company eventually canceled its Wonder Woman project, developed by Monolith Productions. That studio, along with Player First Games and WB Games San Diego, was subsequently shut down as part of internal restructuring.

🧠 New Strategy: Four Franchise Divisions

In response to mounting challenges, the company restructured into four divisions focused on major franchises: Mortal Kombat, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and the DC Universe. At last year’s Morgan Stanley event, Discovery CEO JB Perrette admitted that launching AAA console games remains risky, though he highlighted Hogwarts Legacy as a major win. The title became the top-selling single-player game in the U.S. last year.

Now, there are signs that Hogwarts Legacy might be reimagined as a live-service experience—potentially transforming the beloved wizarding world into a continuously evolving platform.

💬 Fan Speculation: Superman, Batman, or a New Team Format?

DC fans are already speculating which character or team will headline the new title. With Wonder Woman canceled and Batman struggling in live-service form, attention is turning to Superman—especially following James Gunn’s announcement of a new film. Gunn, who is also co-head of DC Studios, has confirmed discussions with Rocksteady and NetherRealm about upcoming DC titles, though it's still unclear whether WB Games Montreal is involved.

❓ Lingering Question: Why Return to Live-Service?

The big question among players: why is Warner Bros. returning to the controversial live-service model after so many recent failures? While competition is heating up—led by Marvel Rivals from NetEase—Warner Bros. seems to be betting on the strength of its brands and a revamped internal strategy to turn the tide.
