Once you have a certain level of financial capability, you can accumulate merit through donations, doing good deeds (financial giving); or sharing correct knowledge to help others (Dharma giving). The more selflessly you give, the easier it is to attract the assistance of benefactors.
The core principle is very simple: if you want to meet benefactors, first become a benefactor to others. The cycle of kindness will ultimately come back to you.
