Through a strong statement on social media, the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro, announced that he ordered the immediate suspension of Colombian coal exports to Israel. The president stated that he does this in his capacity as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, and fully assumed responsibility for this decision.
"As Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, I order that not a ton of coal leaves for Israel, and I assume responsibility. Colombia will not be an accomplice to genocide," wrote the head of state in a post that has generated multiple reactions nationally and internationally.
The measure adds to a series of statements by President Petro in which he has expressed his rejection of the conflict in Gaza, pointing to the Israeli government for possible human rights violations.
So far, there has been no official statement from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism or from the Foreign Ministry regarding the legal or commercial implications of this decision.
Political, economic, and diplomatic sectors are analyzing the repercussions of this order, which could impact bilateral relations between Colombia and Israel, as well as existing commercial commitments.
