According to sources familiar with the plans, it is highly likely that OpenAI will release its GPT-5 model as early as August, a few weeks after Elon Musk introduced xAI's Grok 4.
The new model, which was originally planned for launch this summer, is reportedly going to be positioned as an artificial intelligence system rather than a standalone model, and may include various models and perform different functions.

Altman revealed some details ahead of the launch.
Although the company declined to comment on the rumors, available information confirms that the new GPT-5 model is supported by Microsoft and will include the o3 model along with other technologies.
CEO Sam Altman mentioned this in February, presenting it as an attempt to simplify its offerings. The company ultimately aims to merge the O and GPT series models, striving to create artificial intelligence systems capable of utilizing all available tools and performing a wide range of tasks.

A report from The Verge published on Thursday confirmed the potential debut of GPT-5 in early August. However, previously scheduled release dates for OpenAI have been pushed back due to development difficulties, server power issues, and announcements and leaks from competing artificial intelligence models.

GPT-5 is expected to compete with Grok 4
Discussions about the launch of GPT-5 began a few weeks after Elon Musk's xAI company introduced Grok 4 — its latest artificial intelligence model designed to compete with ChatGPT and Google Gemini, with its advanced image analysis capabilities and question answering.
The company also introduced a premium subscription, SuperGrok Heavy, priced at $300 per month, which offers early access to Grok 4 Heavy and future features.

In recent months, Grok has become even more deeply integrated into X. However, this has also made Grok's failures more noticeable to millions of users.

The capabilities of the latest model will be comparable to the upcoming version of OpenAI GPT-5, but Musk is confident that it will rise to the challenge.

"As for academic questions, Grok 4 surpasses the level of a PhD in all subjects without exception," he said during a recent live stream. "Sometimes it may lack common sense, and it hasn't invented new technologies or discovered new physics yet, but it's just a matter of time."

The launch of Grok 4 preceded the debut of GPT-5, but followed a tumultuous week for Musk's companies. Earlier this month, Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X, stepped down after about two years with the company, and X has yet to announce a successor.

Her departure followed Grok's antisemitic tirade about X, in which it criticized "Jewish leaders" in Hollywood and praised Hitler. Ultimately, developers forced xAI to temporarily restrict access to its X account and remove offensive posts.

xAI rectified the situation, presumably by removing a recently added section from the public system prompt of Grok, which included a list of instructions encouraging not to shy away from making "politically incorrect" statements.

Musk and xAI leadership have largely avoided discussing the incident, focusing instead on the performance and capabilities of Grok 4.
