Potential Losses May Be Higher
Meanwhile, Grogan emphasized that the $3.4 billion figure is merely a conservative estimate.
According to him, this figure only accounts for the ETH proven to be inaccessible, such as coins stuck in faulty contracts or burnt addresses. It does not include ETH linked to lost private keys or inactive wallets from the early days of Ethereum, such as the Genesis wallet that has not transferred funds in years.
He also pointed out that this number is significantly higher when considering Ethereum burned through the EIP-1559 burning mechanism, with over 5.3 million ETH permanently removed from circulation.
