Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, actively supports raising the gas limit on the first layer (L1) network, which has become a hot topic in the crypto community. As of July 2025, nearly 50% of stakers supported the idea of increasing the limit from 37.3 million to 45 million units, and Buterin considers this a safe step due to updates to the Geth client. This decision aims to increase the network's throughput, allowing more transactions to be processed in each block and potentially reducing fees.

Buterin emphasizes that L1 scaling is critical for ensuring censorship resistance, simplifying interactions between L2 solutions, and maintaining network security. He also highlighted the importance of L1's backup role in case of L2 platform failures. However, experts warn of centralization risks due to increasing resource demands on nodes.

The update, including Pectra (April 8, 2025), supports this initiative by doubling the target number of "blobs" per block. Staker voting, similar to the validator mechanism, will provide flexibility in regulating the limit.
