Developers of MetaMask, the popular crypto wallet from Consensys, have confirmed that they will soon fix a bug that causes excessive data writing to solid-state drives (SSD). The issue, discovered by user ripper31337 on GitHub on June 24, 2025, is that the MetaMask extension for Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Opera) continuously writes up to 5 MB/s of data, which amounts to 500 GB daily and 25 TB over three months. This can significantly reduce the lifespan of SSDs, which have a limited number of write cycles.
Consensys reported that the problem affects a small number of users with large amounts of data in their wallet. The team is already working on reducing the amount of write operations and the frequency of background data retrieval. A fix is expected soon. Users who notice high disk activity can monitor it through system tools and temporarily disable the extension.
This incident highlights the importance of transparency and prompt response in the crypto industry. To stay updated on similar news, subscribe to #MiningUpdates !
