#PowellVsTrump Secret Trump–Bessent Talks Revealed: Will Powell Be Fired?

Private discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have shed light on the future of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

According to insiders, Bessent has strongly advised Trump not to dismiss Powell, stressing the economic, market, and political fallout that could follow — especially with just 10 months left in Powell’s term. Bessent pointed out that the Fed is already signaling rate cuts later this year and that the economy remains solid under current policy. He warned that firing Powell could trigger legal challenges, market volatility, and questions about the Fed’s independence.

Although speculation around Powell’s potential removal has been circulating for months, it reignited last week after Trump reportedly mentioned the idea to Republican lawmakers. Still, Trump later told reporters he had no immediate plans to remove Powell.

Past reports, including one from The Wall Street Journal in April, revealed that both Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had urged Trump to avoid taking that step. Bessent recently reminded the president that removing Powell could result in a legal battle — one likely to stretch until May, when Powell’s term naturally expires.

Meanwhile, market reactions were cautious. Any hint of politicizing the Fed makes investors nervous — especially when inflation and interest rates are in the spotlight.
