Plans for a futuristic African city backed by international music icon and entrepreneur Akon have officially been scrapped. The project site in Senegal will now be developed into a $1 billion luxury resort, according to a report by Bloomberg. Originally pitched as a $6 billion "real-life Wakanda," Akon City was to be powered by Akon's cryptocurrency, Akoin. However, the project never progressed beyond the construction of a welcome center. Meanwhile, Akon had also pledged to build a similar futuristic city in Uganda in 2022. Like the original Senegal project, the Ugandan version was to include shopping malls, stadiums, recreational facilities, and run on Akoin. However, this ambitious plan has also failed to take off, with neither a disclosed budget nor a timeline for construction. What happened to Akon's philanthropic plan.
