Surprising Truth: The U.S. Is Only Holding 28,988 Bitcoin, Much Less Than Estimated!
A noteworthy piece of information has just been released: The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) confirms it is managing 28,988 BTC, worth approximately $3.45 billion — significantly lower than the 198,000 BTC that Arkham previously estimated. This information was revealed through a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) transparency request.
The USMS clarifies that this amount of Bitcoin only includes assets that have been legally seized and have become property of the U.S. government. Meanwhile, many other assets are being managed by the FBI, DEA, or other agencies and may not have been subject to official seizure rulings.
Notably, the wallets displayed on Arkham do not reflect the entire reality. For example, 94,000 BTC from the Bitfinex hack still lacks a final ruling, so it may not belong to the government.
The positive point is that, so far, there is no evidence that the U.S. has sold any of this BTC. This opens up many interesting speculations about the future strategy for handling seized Bitcoin, especially as BTC prices are at historic highs.
This serves as evidence that the supply of seized BTC is actually more transparent than we think, and the market still has plenty of room for long-term investors to monitor!
