🛡 Bitcoin is being prepared to defend against the quantum apocalypse — BIP-360: transition to post-quantum cryptography
🔐 Developers led by Jameson Lopp have published a migration plan for BTC to quantum-resistant addresses (P2QRH). The goal is to protect the network from attacks capable of breaking old keys (ECDSA/Schnorr) using quantum computers.
📍 What's in the proposal:
— Phase A (3 years): ban on sending BTC to old addresses
— Phase B (another 2 years later): complete blocking of spending from vulnerable addresses
— Phase C: the possibility to recover frozen coins through ZK-proofs (optional)
📊 According to expert estimates:
— ~25% of all BTC today are at risk
— If no measures are taken, during the first quantum hack, the network may lose trust and capitalization
❗️Migration is not automatic — responsibility will fall on exchanges, wallets, and users.
⚡️Why this is important:
— Quantum attacks are no longer science fiction. According to NIST, they could become a reality by the end of the 2020s.
— This is the first step for Bitcoin to update its cryptographic core.
— Without timely measures, a massive loss of funds and panic is possible.
