PANews July 16 - According to Decrypt, the EU has sanctioned key actors using cryptocurrency to interfere in elections and evade sanctions, including Kremlin-affiliated Simeon Boikov and Moldova's A7 platform. Boikov was sanctioned for spreading false videos about voter fraud in the 2024 U.S. elections, receiving donations through cash-for-cryptocurrency exchanges, the dark web, and Russian exchanges that do not enforce KYC regulations. The sanctions also target the A7 OOO company, which is suspected of influencing the Moldovan elections and was exploited by fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor, who caused a $1 billion loss for Moldova. An executive from TRM Labs stated that the ruble stablecoin A7A5 issued by A7 is designed to evade sanctions, although media reports claim its circulation reached $9.3 billion over four months, this has not been officially confirmed. However, given its purpose, a large circulation is not surprising, and its actual usage is quite limited. The UK had sanctioned A7 months in advance, indicating strengthened international cooperation.
