📱 Smishing: the new invisible attack that jeopardizes your digital assets
In an ecosystem where digital trust is the most valuable currency, smishing (phishing via SMS) has become one of the most subtle and devastating threats. And you could be the next target, without realizing it.
🔐 What is smishing and why is it so effective?
According to Brian Krebs, cybersecurity expert and former columnist for The Washington Post, smishing:
“Exploit the weakest link: the distracted user. A simple wrong click can cost you everything.”
This type of fraud uses text messages that imitate legitimate platforms like Binance, asking you to enter data, keys, or access fake links to “verify suspicious activity.”
🚨 Why is the risk greater in crypto?
Unlike the traditional banking system, Web3 is irreversible. If you sign a malicious transaction or give away your credentials, there is no “cancel” button.
Changpeng Zhao (CZ), founder of Binance, has reiterated that:
“Your security starts with you. Activate your anti-phishing code and avoid interactions outside the platform.”
Binance provides a customizable anti-phishing code in your account. This is automatically added to official emails and notifications, helping you differentiate between real communications and traps.
⚠️ Real cases and hard lessons
In March of this year, a user in Hong Kong lost over $38,000 in crypto after clicking on a fake SMS that imitated Binance. What started as a simple verification ended with an empty wallet and no possibility of recovering the funds.
According to Chainalysis, in 2024 social engineering fraud accounted for 17% of thefts in Web3.
🛡️ What should you do now?
1. Activate your anti-phishing code on Binance from the security panel.
2. Never enter data from links in SMS.
3. Always verify the URL: Binance.com and its official domains.
4. Use 2FA authentication via hardware or application (not via SMS).
5. Educate your contacts and share this information.
