According to Deep Tide TechFlow, on July 14, as reported by CoinDesk, the money laundering criminal case against Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm will go to trial today in Manhattan, where the prosecution and defense will begin jury selection, with the trial expected to last four weeks.
Storm was arrested in Washington state in 2023, facing three charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering, conspiracy to violate U.S. sanctions, and conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmission business. If convicted on all counts, he could face up to 45 years in prison.
Prosecutors allege that Tornado Cash was used to launder over $1 billion in criminal proceeds, including funds from the North Korean hacking group Lazarus Group. The defense argues that Storm is merely a developer of open-source decentralized software and should not be held responsible for others' misuse of the tool.
