Tether, the largest issuer of stablecoins, announced the cessation of support for $USDT on five blockchains — Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand — starting September 1, 2025. According to CEO Paolo Ardoino, this decision is part of a strategic review of infrastructure to focus on more scalable and technologically advanced platforms such as Ethereum, Tron, and Lightning Network. The volume of USDT on these networks has significantly decreased: about 82.9 million USDT remains on Omni, less than 250,000 on Kusama, and less than 1 million on Bitcoin Cash.
Tether will halt the redemption of tokens and freeze balances on these networks. Users are advised to transfer USDT to supported blockchains through exchanges (Binance, Kraken) or their own wallets (MetaMask, Trust Wallet) by September. This decision reflects the trend in the crypto industry towards a focus on efficient L2 protocols. Tether is also actively investing in infrastructure projects, particularly in mining in Paraguay.
