Trump proposed that the U.S. federal government take over New York City and Washington, D.C.
During a cabinet meeting at the White House, when asked about the upcoming mayoral election in New York City, Trump attacked Democratic candidate Mamdani and mentioned other competitors, but he refused to support any of them, stating that "the White House has tremendous power to manage local matters when necessary."
He then turned his attention to the U.S. capital, saying, "We can manage Washington, D.C. We are keeping an eye on Washington, D.C. We do not want crime in Washington, D.C. We want this city to run smoothly." For a long time, Trump has called for the U.S. federal government to take over Washington, D.C., complaining that local leaders are ineffective and stating that the city is rife with crime.
