Among the first cryptocurrencies to follow Bitcoin were Litecoin, which appeared in 2011, and Ripple in 2012. These so-called altcoins emerged with new ideas aimed at improving some characteristics of Bitcoin, such as its speed of transaction or/and energy efficiency.
