Earth just had its shortest day ever
On July 9, 2025, our planet completed a full rotation 1.4 milliseconds faster than the usual 24 hours. This shaved a tiny sliver of time off the clock, setting a new record for the shortest day ever measured.
Scientists believe these fluctuations come from shifts in Earth's inner core, ocean currents, and even weather systems. Over the long run, though, Earth is actually slowing down, and in about 200 million years, a full day could last 25 hours.
