#TrumpTariffs
The President of the U.S., Donald Trump, said on his social network Truth that he sent letters to 14 countries, including South Africa, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, Kazakhstan, Thailand, and Tunisia, as well as Japan and South Korea, warning them of the imposition of customs taxes between 25% and 40% if they do not reach a deal with Washington.
Trump indicated that he is taking this measure because trade relations with Japan and Korea are, unfortunately, far from reciprocal, although he expressed openness to reconsider these tariffs if the affected countries change their tax policies regarding American products.
The Prime Minister of Japan, Shigeru Ishib, had said on Sunday that he would not easily concede in trade talks with Washington.
The tariffs established in the President's latest letters will take effect on August 1, and the White House warned of further increases if the affected countries retaliate against American products.
Trump signed an order on Monday to postpone the deadline from July 9 to August 1 for reaching an agreement with each country to avoid the implementation of higher rates.
