Trump criticizes the anti-American policies of BRICS countries
U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose an additional 10% tariff on countries joining the BRICS economic bloc in his attempts to create an alternative economic system. Writing on Truth Social, Trump warned that there would be no exceptions to this policy aimed at supporters of 'anti-American BRICS policies.'
Trump's warning followed the bloc's release of the Rio de Janeiro Declaration, which seemed to be directed against the tariff policy of the U.S. president. In the declaration, BRICS member states expressed concern over 'the rise of unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures that not only distort trade but also contradict the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO).'
This step underscores the decisive effort of the United States to exert economic pressure, especially as the deadline of July 9 approaches for the expiration of the 90-day moratorium on tariffs, which could lead to the imposition of new, higher tariffs on imports. The White House indicated that these letters would clarify that countries 'will have to pay' if they wish to continue trading with the United States without new agreements, signaling a hardline 'take it or leave it' approach in international trade negotiations.
