Vitalik Buterin proposes gas limit for ZK to enhance Ethereum
#VitalikButerin , co-founder of Ethereum, co-authored the EIP-7983 proposal, aimed at introducing a gas limit on individual transactions. This change will enhance the stability of the Ethereum network, protect against denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, and support the integration of more advanced cryptographic forms such as zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP).
Details about EIP-7983 and its benefits
EIP-7983 proposes a gas limit of 16,777,216 gas for each transaction, while the current gas limit per block of #Ethereum is about 36 million gas and there is no limit for individual transactions. This change will break down large transactions, making the network more stable and encouraging the use of ZKP, especially zk-SNARKs, which Ethereum developers have been working to integrate for nearly a decade.
Evan Van Ness, a prominent Ethereum researcher, believes that EIP-7983 aligns with the long-term goals of the community to "SNARK everything," aiming to bring the entire internet of value through Ethereum. ZK-SNARKs can enhance scalability and support privacy for Ethereum.
Enhancing stability and security
EIP-7983 also aims to address the issue of uneven workloads among network participants if there is no gas limit for transactions, which could affect the overall stability of Ethereum. This proposal is also viewed as a form of "additional protection" against DoS attacks, similar to what Ethereum faced in 2016.
