In June, the new Instagram Threads app attracted 115.1 million daily mobile users, narrowing the gap with Elon Musk's X, which had 132 million.

According to Similarweb data provided to TechCrunch, Mark Zuckerberg's Threads mobile app, launched as a simpler alternative to Musk's X, reached 115.1 million active mobile users last month.
This figure places it just below X's 32 million daily mobile users during the same period. Even more strikingly, Threads grew by 127.8% compared to June of last year, while the daily mobile user count for X shrank by 15.2% over the past twelve months.

However, the situation changes when considering visits from desktop computers. X still leads in web browsers with nearly 145.8 million daily desktop visits in June, TechCrunch notes.

In contrast, Threads managed to garner just 6.9 million desktop views. Such a split likely reflects user habits: long-time Twitter fans often log in from computers, while Instagram users, and now Threads, typically open the app briefly on their phones, scroll through a few posts, and then close it.

Bluesky remains a small competitor to Threads and X.
For those interested in Bluesky, the smaller newcomer also saw a surge but remains tiny compared to it. TechCrunch reports that the daily active user count for Bluesky grew by 372.5 percent year-over-year, reaching around 4.1 million. A total of about 37 million people have registered on the platform.

Despite the rapid percentage growth, Bluesky remains a secondary player alongside the giants. However, it has potential in the long term. This is less about new user surges that appear on the platform just to protest the policies of another network and more about Bluesky's aspiration to become a more open ecosystem.

On the other hand, the choice between Musk's X and Zuckerberg's Threads might seem like a losing decision. Although Zuckerberg has not stirred up as much controversy as Musk, he has indirectly supported and endorsed Musk's promotion of X at some point.
At the same time, Threads' rapid growth shows that Zuckerberg can compete by offering a cleaner, mobile-focused space, even if it doesn't yet match X's desktop stronghold.
In the end, many users may keep both apps on their phones, checking Threads for quick updates and relying on X when they need urgent news and ongoing communication.
The competition is far from over, but for now, Threads shows that it can at least compete with X in the race for daily attention.
