PANews reported on July 8 that according to The Block, on Monday, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin expressed a new stance on software release in his new blog, advocating for the adoption of a slightly more restrictive 'copyleft' license, which is different from his previous support for permissive licenses that allowed developers to use and redistribute code without restrictions. Vitalik explained that licenses like CC - BY - SA and GPL stipulate that if derivative works are created and distributed, the new works must be released under the same license. Although he generally opposes copyright, he wants to 'use copyright against copyright' and ensure that derivative works remain open to the public through licensing.
He said that the new stance is influenced by the mainstream adoption of open-source code by companies like Google and Huawei, as well as intensified competition in the cryptocurrency field. The competition in the cryptocurrency sector is fierce and profit-driven now; we can no longer expect people to open-source purely out of goodwill. Open-source cannot rely solely on 'requests' but also needs 'strong measures', meaning that only those who open-source code can gain access to certain code.
